2. If you’re asked to update your McAfee Security Scan Plus software, click Update now. After the update finishes, McAfee scans your computer automatically.
3. When the scan finishes, click Settings.
4. Select how often you want to scan your computer, and then click Apply.

Staying protected with automatic updates

Before you scan, your McAfee Security Scan Plus software automatically checks your software to ensure it’s up to date. By default, McAfee automatically downloads and installs updates on your computer to keep it protected. If you want to change how you receive updates, you can let McAfee notify you before installing updates on your computer. You can change the automatic update setting on the Settings page.

There are five status types that you might see in the overall protection status bar:

• Your computer is at risk.
• Scan your computer for issues.
• Issues found.
• No issues found.
• McAfee is protecting your computer.

The status types give you an overall picture of your computer’s security, according to the states reported by your security software. You can perform various actions to protect your computer, depending on your protection status.

Status type: Your computer is at risk.

At risk because your virus or firewall software are not found, out of date, or turned off. Your computer might also be infected with viruses, spyware, and other potential threats.

1. Look in the drawers to get detailed information about your virus and firewall protection, and what you can do to protect your computer. If your computer is infected, look in the Threats Detected drawer for instructions on how to fix the issues.
2. If you need to purchase new software, or renew your McAfee subscription, click the link inside the drawer to go to the McAfee website.

Status type: Scan your computer for issues.

In the overall protection status bar, click Scan again.

The bottom half of the screen contains drawers that show the state of your virus, firewall, and web protection software. You can open the drawer by clicking the down arrow on the far right, next to the status. In the drawer you can find detailed information about the results of your security scan and, where applicable, useful next steps. If we find issues during your scan, you can open the Threats Detected drawer to find out what the issues are and how you can fix them.

If your software state is Not found, click the link in the drawer that takes you to the McAfee website where you can learn more about McAfee security products available to suit your needs:

If your McAfee software is On, you don’t have to do anything. Continue to use your McAfee Security Scan Plus software to keep your computer protected.

If your third party anti-virus and firewall software is on, let your McAfee Security Scan Plus software continue to check your computer and monitor your protection status. For your convenience, the drawer includes a link to the McAfee website where you can learn more about McAfee security products available to suit your needs:

• firewall protection software that protects against intruders who can hijack your computer;

Note: When the state is unknown, McAfee cannot check your protection status because your virus, firewall, or web protection software are not reporting correctly or there is an unexpected problem.

If your software state is Needs attention, you have more than one anti-virus or firewall product installed on your computer. Having more than one anti-virus or firewall product might cause problems on your computer. To ensure that your computer continues to work properly, McAfee recommends either removing the extra product, or removing both products, and clicking the link in the drawer that takes you to the McAfee website where you can learn more about and purchase McAfee security products available to suit your needs:

• virus protection software that guards against viruses, spyware, and other threats;
• firewall protection software that protects against intruders who can hijack your computer;
