How to get IPv6 with a TP-Link C50 Router on BT

I’m using the TP-Link Archer C50 AC1200 with an Openreach modem in this tutorial. However, it should apply to similar TP-Link routers who by default cannot connect to BT’s IPv6.

The main issue with using the TP-Link Router to connect to BT’s IPv6 is that it won’t connect using TP-Link’s default settings and according to some BT forum posts it’s due to how TP-Link uses the /64 prefix for IPv6 when the BT uses /56 prefix for IP addresses and there’s no real way to change it.[1]

This is a workaround to get the router to connect to BT’s IPv6 services and may or may not work based on your setup.

First, you have to update to the latest firmware from TP-Link which you can find here. After updating your firmware, navigate to the TP-Link administrator panel (typically on 192.168.0.1) and log in with your login credentials, if you don’t know them and you know you haven’t changed it the default username is admin and the password is also admin though you should get that changed ASAP. After logging in click on the IPv6 button on the panel on the left-hand side.

Then click on IPv6 WAN and change your settings as seen below.

You can choose to re-enter your BT broadband username and password here, but you can choose to use the same PPPoE session as your IPv4 connection which will do that for you. At this point I would recommend not using BT’s DNS services as at the time of me writing this, BT still doesn’t index IPv6 sites. But please note that not using BT’s DNS will deactivate the parental controls/web filtering that you have on your BT account.

The DNS servers I would recommend using are Cloudflare’s DNS or Google’s DNS and their IPv4 and IPv6 addresses are as follows:

1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 for IPv4

2606:4700:4700::1111 and 2606:4700:4700:1001 for IPv6

8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 for IPv4

2001:4860:4860::8888 and 2001:4860:4860::8844 for IPv6

That should be it! Reboot your router and then go to test-ipv6.com or ipv6.гугл.com on your PC to test to see if IPv6 is working, Android devices don’t seem to like to connect to IPv6 as of the Android Q Beta.

There’s also a small glitch where the router would say that it’s still connecting to IPv6 but as long you can see that it has a gateway IP and can access ipv6.гугл.com, you should be fine.

Edit: After running this setup for a while, I’ve discovered that sometimes, the C50 was unable to get an IPv6 address after a reboot. This can be fixed by toggling the MLD Proxy option off and back on again.

All modern wireless routers, including those мейд by TP-Link, can use IPv6 addresses to connect to the Internet. Your Internet service provider should provide IPv6 connectivity, and if possible, you should enable IPv6 on the router. The benefits of doing this conversion include better security and slightly improved speed. Here’s how to enable IPv6 on any TP-Link router with WiFi 6.

How to find IPv6 settings on TP-Link WiFi 6 . router

Before activating the IPv6 address and Internet connection on the TP-Link router, you must access the appropriate settings. This can only be done from the TP-Link router’s firmware and not from the Tether app. Therefore, open a web browser on your computer and navigate to tplinkwifi.net or 192.168.0.1. Next, enter the admin password for the TP-Link WiFi 6 router and press LOG IN.

You will first see a network map and some basic settings. IPv6 settings can be found by clicking or tapping Advanced.

In the left sidebar, scroll down and tap IPv6. Then you can see all the IPv6 settings of the TP-Link router on the right.

How to enable IPv6 on TP-Link WiFi 6 . router

In section Internet IPv6 on the right, put the toggle switch IPv6 into status ON.

By default, the TP-Link router must use the same Internet connection type and settings as for IPv4. However, if you are not satisfied with the settings, click or tap the drop-down list “Internet Connection Type”, select the appropriate type and enter your settings.

Internet connection in the example is PPPoE and TP-Link WiFi 6 router will correctly check the option “Share the same PPPoE session with IPv4”, meaning that there is no other configuration left to do. However, if you have a different type of Internet connection, like Static IP or 6to4 Tunnel, you may need to enter your specific settings. Links are also available Advanced Settings.

Click Advanced Settings will display more configuration options, where you can set how the router receives IPv6 addresses. The article recommends you to use auto or Specified by ISP (after contacting the supplier to obtain the necessary settings). You can also set which DNS addresses are used. If you want to use custom addresses, select “Use the Following DNS Addresses” and enter the IPv6 addresses of your favorite DNS servers.

When you’re all set up, don’t forget to press Connect let the TP-Link router connect to the Internet with the new settings and start using the IPv6 address.

The Internet connection will be idle for a few seconds while the router establishes a connection via IPv6.

How to set up IPv6 service on the TP-Link wireless router

Note : Please make sure that you are provided IPv6 internet service by your internet provider. If not, please contact with your IPv6 internet provider first.

Physical Connection
1. Power on your modem.

2. Connect the Internet port on your Router to the Modem’s LAN port with an Ethernet cable. If your Internet connection is through an Ethernet cable from the wall instead of through a DSL / Cable / Satellite modem, connect the Ethernet cable directly to the router’s Internet port.

3. Connect your computer to one of the ports labeled 1~4 on the Router with an Ethernet cable.

4. Power on the modem and wait for one minute.

5. Plug the provided Power Adapter into the Power jack and the other end to a standard electrical wall socket. Press the On/Off button to power on the Router.

Go to IPv6 Support at the left хэнд side men. In the drop-down menu of IPv6 Support, please choose IPv6 Setup.

Please make sure that Enable IPv6 has been checked. To Configure WAN Connection Type , if you are not sure what the connection type is, please contact your IPv6 provider. Here takes PPPoEv6 as an example.

After the PPPoEv6 i s selected, please input the User name and Password provided by the IPv6 Provider.

For the Get IPv6 Address Way, please choose Get IPv6 prefix delegation.
For the IPV6 Address Assign Type, please choose SLAAC.
Then click at Save.
