1) Go to ‘Add Roles and Features’ in server dashboard, select ‘Role-based or feature-based installation’, do not select anything in Server Roles, and under Features select ‘Desktop Experience’ as mentioned below.

Adding “This PC” icon to Desktop provides quick access to Hard Disk, Storage Drives, Network Locations and major folders on your computer like Documents, Downloads, Photos, Music, Photos and Videos.

The option to customize Desktop Icons is located in Windows 10 Settings and the quickest way to access this option is to right-click and select the Personalize option.

1. Right-click on the Desktop and select Personalize option in the contextual menu.

2. On Personalization screen, select Themes in the left-pane. In the right-pane, click on Desktop Icon Settings link, located under “Related Settings” section.

3. On the next screen, check the little box next to Computer and click on Apply and OK to save this setting on your computer.

Note: You can rename This PC to My Computer by right-clicking on the This PC icon.

Similarly, you can Add Recycle Bin, Control Panel and other Icons to Desktop.

1. Rename “This PC” Desktop Icon as “My Computer”

If you have been using Windows for a while, you must be knowing that “This PC” icon was popularly known as “My Computer” in older versions of Windows.

If you liked the earlier name, you can Rename “This PC” as “My Computer” by right-clicking on This PC and selecting the Rename option in the contextual menu.

Similarly, you can Rename Other Desktop icons and provide your own unique names to all Desktop Icons on your computer.

2. Show or Hide Desktop Icons

At any time, you can quickly Show or Hide All Desktop Icons on your computer by right-clicking on the desktop and selecting Show Desktop Icons and Hide Desktop Icons option.

3. Pin “This PC” to Start Menu

If the Desktop on your computer is cluttered, you can “This PC” Icon to start menu by right-clicking on This PC and selecting Pin to Start option in the contextual menu.

This allows you to access “This PC” in the start menu by clicking on the Start button.

Similarly, you can pin other Desktop icons to the start menu and they will remain in Start Menu even if you remove them from desktop.

Перед тем как добавлять «Мой компьютер» либо «Этот компьютер» на десктоп, юзеру нужно осознать, что все-таки конкретно он желает добавить: значок либо ярлычек. Меж этими понятиями есть определенная разница, и самая основная — контекстное меню. При добавлении значка, вызывая контекстное меню, вы будете работать конкретно с системными пт. На снимке экрана ниже видно, что вы можете вызвать «Управление компьютером», управлять подключением сетевого диска и вызвать «Свойства» самой Windows (поглядеть общую информацию о ПК, включая его аппаратные свойства, версию операционной системы, также перейти в другие ее разделы).

Соответственно, если для вас нужен этот вариант, то добавлять необходимо значок. Зависимо от применяемой Виндовс порядок действий может различаться, и ниже вы отыщите аннотацию для «десятки» и раздельно для 8 и 7.

В Win 10 есть сходу несколько методов того, как можно добавить подходящий значок, потому юзер свободен выбирать хоть какой подходящий: штатное приложение «Параметры» либо «Панель управления», окно «Выполнить». Вариант 2: Добавление ярлыка

Ярлычек отличается от значка тем, что после его сотворения формально так же будет раскрываться окно «Мой компьютер» / «Этот компьютер», но контекстное меню уже будет таким же, как и у хоть какого другого ярлычка:

Более тщательно особенность контекстного меню значка была объяснена в прошлых абзацах, сейчас же оно будет показывать не системные пункты, а разные манипуляции с самим ярлычком. К тому же вначале у ярлычка будет другая иконка, не компьютера, а «Проводника», потому для более обычного вида ее придется поменять самостоятельно.

В поле «Укажите расположение объекта» вставьте строчку C:\Windows\explorer.exe «:: и переходите «Далее».

Измените название на любое удобное и нажмите на «Готово».

Как видим, создался ярлык, при открытии загружающий окно «Этот компьютер» / «Мой компьютер». Осталось сменить для него иконку на отражающую суть ярлыка. Для этого кликните по нему правой кнопкой мыши и перейдите в «Свойства».

Откроется окно, где щелкните по кнопке «Сменить значок».

В поле «Искать значки в этом файле» вставьте путь C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll и нажмите на клавиатуре Enter.

Выделите иконку с компьютером и подтвердите действие кнопкой «ОК».

Теперь остается сохранить редактирование ярлыка кнопкой «ОК» в окне его «Свойств».

Результат — ярлык, внешне идентичный значку, а вот функционально — только наполовину.

«Мой компьютер» не добавляется на рабочий стол

В некоторых случаях у пользователей никак не выходит отобразить значок на десктопе, и стандартные рекомендации не помогают. В такой ситуации следует искать проблему на стороне своей операционной системы.

Восстановление системы. Первое, и часто самое эффективное, — восстановление системы. Помогает, если значок компьютера на десктопе у вас был всегда, и внезапно исчез, после этого вернуть его не выходит. Обычно в такой ситуации оказываются повреждены некоторые системные файлы, но узнать, какие именно, самостоятельно очень трудно, из-за чего оптимальным решением станет восстановление ОС из резервной копии. Сканирование системных файлов на целостность. Этот консольный инструмент занимается восстановлением определенных системных файлов из своего же репозитория, поэтому есть смысл обратиться к данной утилите в случае, когда видимых причин возникновения неполадки со значком нет. Использование специальных программ. Под этой фразой стоит понимать повторное использование сторонней программы-твикера, влияющей на некоторые параметры Windows. Делать это стоит только если ранее вы самостоятельно отключали значок «Мой компьютер» или «Этот компьютер» через данный софт. Искать и скачивать программу специально для включения не надо.
Создание reg-файла. Данный метод рекомендуем выполнять уверенным в своих силах и знаниях юзерам, которым ничего из вышеперечисленного не помогло.
Откройте стандартное приложение «Блокнот», например, отыскав его через «Пуск».

Вставьте туда следующие строчки: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel]

Вызовите меню «Файл», где выберите пункт «Сохранить как».

Сперва измените «Тип файла» на «Все файлы (*.*)», затем впишите любое название файла, после которого поставьте точку и добавьте расширение «reg», чтобы получилось что-то вроде этого: lumpics.reg. Укажите место, куда будет помещен файл, и нажмите кнопку «Сохранить».

Остается нажать по созданному файлу дважды левой кнопкой мыши для запуска, после этого либо перезагрузить «Проводник», либо выйти и зайти в учетную запись Windows, либо перезапустить компьютер.

Show My Computer Icon on Windows 2019/2016 & 2012 R2 Servers

If you have Windows server Operating Systems, you will not find My Computer icon by default. Windows 2012 R2 and recent Server Operating Systems like 2016/2019 have different ways to show my computer icon on the desktop.

This post was originally published in the year 2012, and now we are updating it for server versions Windows 2016 and 2019. Also if you want to add ‘Run’ icon to Windows Server taskbar for easy access, then you will find the way in this guide.

Windows 2012 R2 and later server versions are more powerful and secure Operating Systems. Microsoft has enhanced built-in security by removing unwanted modules. To get back most of the desktop experience features, we need to install an additional feature. By default, you will not find ‘Personalize’ option on the desktop menu which usually helps to show desktop icons including my computer. By the way, if you have selected the full desktop version during Windows 2016 or 2019 server installation, you will see the Personalize option.

We earlier published a guide about how to show My computer on the Windows 10 desktop, but the same method will not work here because of missing Personalize option in the menu.

Steps to Show My Computer on Windows Server Desktop

In Windows 2012 R2

As mentioned earlier, this feature is not included by default in Windows 2012 R2 Server. If you can manage the server without My computer icon or other personalization options, it is better to continue without installing additional features. But if you desperately want these additional features then follow these steps.

We must install the ‘Desktop Experience’ feature to get back personalization options in Windows 2012 R2 server desktop.

1) Go to ‘Add Roles and Features’ in server dashboard, select ‘Role-based or feature-based installation’, do not select anything in Server Roles, and under Features select ‘Desktop Experience’ as mentioned below.

Install other required features too.

You must restart the server after the installation.

In Windows 2016 & 2019 Servers

Desktop personalization option is already part of the latest Operating Systems. Now after the desktop experience feature installation, you would have the same option in Windows 2012 R as well.

2) When you right-click on the desktop you must be seeing the ‘Personalize’ option (which was not shown in earlier screenshot).

3) Click on Personalize and ‘Change desktop icons’ at the top left corner. It will bring back our traditional desktop icons settings.

In Windows 2016 and 2019 Server Operating Systems, you will see the below screen in the settings app. Click on ‘Themes’ then ‘Desktop icon settings’.

4) Select the icons you want to show, in our case it is My Computer (This PC) icon.

Add ‘Run’ Icon to Windows Task Bar in Windows Server

To add ‘Run’ icon in Windows server OS taskbar like how Windows PowerShell was included by default, follow these steps.

5) First, go to the ‘All Apps’ view. If you are already in Metro UI view you can right click on empty space, then click on ‘All Apps’ icon which will appear at bottom.

If you are in the desktop view, you need to move the cursor to top right corner to get more options. Click on ‘Start’ icon to get metro UI, then follow above steps to get All apps icon.

6) Once you can see all applications, find out Run and right-click on it. More options will appear at the bottom of the screen. You can select ‘Pin to taskbar’ here, even you can pin Run icon to start menu.

That’s it, we have added Run in Windows 2012R2 server taskbar (and in start menu too)

We may not need to do this activity on the latest server versions because it has the powerful search option which can show all programs, settings, and files quickly.
