Rename User Account on Windows 10
I got a Windows 10 machine at work which was used by UserA who is not working any more with us. To avoid having to go through setups, installations, etc, I want to rename the existing account to UserB so I don’t lose any settings and can continue using them but as UserB. How do I do that properly?

Ways to Change User Name of Account in Windows 10
There are 6 different ways to complete this as indicated in the Windows 10: Change User Name of Account in Windows 10 post but I will reference one of those that should work well for all versions of Windows 10 whether Home, Pro, Enterprise, etc. but see that post for other ways to do this.
To Change Name of a Local Account in netplwiz
- Press the Win+R keys to open the Run dialog, type netplwiz into Run, and click/tap on OK to open netplwiz.
- Check the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer box, select the local account you want to change the name of, and click/tap on the Properties button. (see screenshot below)
- In the General tab, type the new User name (ex: «Brink3») you want for the local account, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)
- If you wanted to have Windows automatically sign in to an account at startup, then you will need to set this up again now.
- When finished, click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)
- If you are currently signed in to this local account, click/tap on Yes to sign out and apply your changes.

Change Account Name and Rename User Account Folder in Windows 10
Your username is part of your identity used to sign in to Windows 10. Mistakes can sometimes happen when creating a username. There are several ways you can fix that. Currently, the Settings app doesn’t offer an option to edit usernames. There are two ways to work around this limitation.
Method 1: Classic Control Panel
Find and open the classic Control Panel. One way to do this is to press Windows + R and then type Control, then hit Enter. User Accounts control panel, then click Manage another account.
Click the account you want to edit.
Click Change the account name.
Enter the correct username for the account, then click Change Name.
Method 2: User Accounts Advanced Control Panel
There is another way you can do it. Press Windows key + R, type: netplwiz or control userpasswords2, then hit Enter. Select the account, then click Properties.
Select the General tab, then enter the user name you want to use. Click Apply then OK, click Apply then OK again to confirm the change.
What about Your User Folder Name?
Changing the username is pretty basic, but this change is not reflected in the User folder located within the C: drive. Renaming it can be risky—sometimes sticking with it or just creating a new user account then copying your files to the new account is a better option. Yes, it’s annoying, but it’s better than ending up with a corrupt user profile. If you must change it to hush your OCD, there is an advanced option available. This involves using the command line to access the security identifier (SID) then making the necessary change in the Registry. Before you go any further, enable then log into the built-in Administrator account. As a precaution, create a system restore point in advance. To access all the information within the SID requires using the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line to reveal the value needed to find and change it in the Registry. Open the command prompt with Administrator privileges, type: wmic useraccount list full, then hit Enter. Scroll down, then take note of the SID values for the account you want to change.
Type: cls to clear the screen.
The next step is to rename the account. Doing this from the command line is just as easy.
Type CD c:\users then hit Enter. Type: rename OldAccountName NewAccountName

For example, rename “Angry Dah Cosof” “Angela Brown.” regedit Right-click Regedit. Click Run as administrator. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

Remember that SID value we accessed earlier? Now is the time to reference it. Once you find it, select it, then double-click the value ProfileImagePath. You will see the old name we had earlier is still there. Change it to the new name you want to use. There you have it, the name you actually intended. Mistakes like this can happen, but there is always a way to fix them.

When I set up my laptop…it asked for my outlook account email address. Then it took the first 5 characters of that and now that’s my user name lynn_. Very aggravating. And I can’t change the name…Change the Name doesn’t appear – probably because there is only one user. But now I’m afraid to make any changes… So I’m stuck with lynn_ :
Lynn — I feel your pain. When I set up my laptop, when asked for my email address, I filled in the one I used. But since then, I’ve moved to a different email server. I’ve tried to change this, but I haven’t yet found a way to do it. The old address continues to show up from time to time, and yes, it’s annoying. Why don’t they make it easier to fix things like this?

Changing your account name is a sticky operation in Windows…. if you also want to change the PATH in c:\users\ACCOUNT You might try something like converting your account back to a LOCAL account – then converting it back to a Microsoft account with your email address. Use the SEARCH feature here o groovyPost for help with doing this. For example, here’s one that will help. https://www.groovypost.com/howto/create-local-account-windows-10/
Thanks!! My OCD over this was driving me crazy 🙂 I had to create a temporary account and make sure I was completely logged out of the account that I wanted to change before I could rename the user directory but once I did that it all worked. Of course now my OCD is requiring that I delete every trace of the temporary account!
How To Rename User Accounts In Windows 10
Creating and managing user accounts is easy in Windows 10. After creating user accounts, you can enable or disable user accounts, add or remove user account passwords, and delete user accounts with ease.
Some users want to rename their existing user accounts for some reason. They want to rename user accounts without deleting the existing one or creating a new one. Luckily, there is a way to rename user accounts in Windows 10 without losing data or creating a new user account.

The catch is that this method doesn’t work for Microsoft accounts. Since Microsoft account is not a local user account, Windows 10 will continue to show your actual Microsoft account name on the login screen and other areas of the operating system even after renaming the account in Computer Management. If you want to rename Microsoft accounts, please refer to our how to rename Microsoft accounts guide.
That said, this method works great for local user accounts. You can easily rename local user accounts.
In this guide, we will give you step-by-step directions to rename a local user account in Windows 10.
Method 1 of 2
Rename local user accounts in Windows 10 Pro and above
NOTE: Local Users and Groups is not available in Windows 10 Home edition. If you are on Windows 10 Home edition, please refer to the directions in Method 2.
Step 1: Open Computer Management. The easiest way is to right-click on the Start button on the taskbar and then click Computer Management.

Method 2 of 2

Please deprecate this answer and stop confusing people, this method only appends user account info on top of what is already there and part of the original account data remains on the system
doesnt even work smh, doesnt have an option to change account name
despite doing this, it just adds my name to the original fucking account name,, and it still lists the it under the original user name, when you look it up under this pc, the fuck is wrong with you guys, sheesh cant do something so fucking simple,
I have the same issue, I want to to change the user account in Windows Explorer from the 5 letter I assume is the first 5 letters of my name to the full 7 letters, as it is now with the 5 letters, very annoying…. I wiped my hard drive and erased the hard drive, from what I can gather, it has used the first 5 letters of my email address for the users..this pc-locla disk-users-[my name only 5 letters long not 7]…
yes but changing this does not change the name of the user’s folder when viewing it in File Explorer. For example, I got a new laptop, and created my username as my first name + surname. When copying all my documents from my old laptop, which contain program files that link to drawings/documents with absolute paths in the folder structure, I realised that my username on my old laptop was just my first name. I need to match the folder names in my new laptop otherwise all these paths will be broken. But your instructions still leave this foldername unchanged in the User folder, and I cant see a way to change it. Please advise, thank you.
