Front panel header has many names:

What are Front Panel Connectors?

Front panel connectors are used in power supply units. A power supply unit helps with providing a stable voltage.

Front panel connectors are used in power supply units. A power supply unit helps with providing a stable voltage to electronic equipment. Front panel connectors have a cylindrical shape, and each has a specific purpose.

Some leads can provide power from the main cables to different components, switches that turn the power off and on, and sense cables for voltage measurements.

Front panel connectors on motherboards allow for easy and seamless connections with the PC case. These cables come from inside your computer, so if you want them to look new again, it’s best not just leave them sitting there.

What are Front Panel Connectors

The Front Panel Connectors (front panel header) or FPanel is a block of connectors on your motherboard that control power for devices such as fans, power reset, LEDs, power on, beep code speaker switches, and ports on your PC case/chassis.

Front panel connectors are the most common way for computers to communicate with each other. They allow you to access hardware settings and control panels without having to open up your computer case, which would void any warranty if done improperly.

Front Panel Connectors are an essential part of any PC build. They serve a specific function and can be found on the PCB for connectors such as power, reset/switch, etc., all neatly tucked behind clear plastic covers that keep their purpose safe from curious eyes until you’re ready to connect them up.

Choosing a case with a front panel connector can help you streamline your system’s design and install, by having connectivity options on the inside of the chassis rather than hidden away behind your motherboard.

The primary purpose of these cables is to provide simple access to internal computer hardware without opening up the PC case. They also offer a way for users to clean out dust from inside their PC.

As mentioned earlier, there are different primary functions that almost All Front Panel Headers have and different types of front panel connectors, which you can find on PCs.

  • Power Switch Pins – Turns the entire computer on and off. Other pins can control individual drives and devices. Power Switch – This pin is where you will connect your power switch to allow users to turn their PC on and off quickly.
  • Reset Switch Pins – Resets the BIOS, dual-purpose push-button that allows for a cold-boot or warm reboot.
  • Reset Switch – Resets the BIOS, dual-purpose push-button that allows for a cold-boot or warm reboot.
  • LED Headers – These pin headers allow you to connect LEDs to monitor the status of components such as power and hard disk drives.
  • Headphone Jack Pins – Allows the connection of audio ports such as headphones, the mic on front panel audio ports, and back audio ports.
  • Serial Headers – Provides two standard serial port connections and one mini-serial port connection.
  • IDE Connector Pins– These pins provide access to internal hard disk drives while ensuring data is not lost during power outages or malfunctions.

  • PS/2 Connectors – These connectors provide the connection of the keyboard and mouse to the motherboard.
  • Speaker Header Pins – Provides user’s connection to PC speaker for basic system information.
  • Speaker Header – Provides user’s connection to PC speaker for basic system information.
  • Molex Connector – This connector is used to share power with add-on peripherals such as hard drives and CD/DVD ROMs; If you have a dedicated graphics card in your PC, it’s recommended that you don’t connect these connectors.

What do Front Panel Connectors Look Like

To see your front Panel Headers, you must take off the plastic or metal case covering them. This will reveal a series of pins that allow you to connect certain pieces of hardware to your motherboard.

You will find many connectors in most cases, but not all of them will be as important as others. For example, there is an LED connector, which can be helpful for people who like to keep their computer brightly lit up.

There is a “speaker” connector, which allows you to connect a speaker to your case. You can then hear beeps and boops as your computer starts up.

There may be a reset button, which resets the BIOS (a program that comes with your computer and is important for booting it up.)

How to Choose a Case With a Front Panel Connector

When you choose to go with a case that has front panel connectors, it can be more expensive than getting one without them.

They usually come with the convenience of having a power button and reset switch on the outside of the case, but you typically have to buy these separately.

So be sure to budget a little more money if you plan on going with a case that has this feature.

What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Front Panel Connectors?

The main advantage of having a front panel connector is having your computer’s components with the power button and reset switch on the outside of the case. This makes it easier to turn your computer on and off and reset it without opening up the case.

The only disadvantage I can see from having front panel connectors is the cost when buying your case.

How to Locate the Front Panel Connectors?

To find the front panel headers, you should look for them on your motherboard. If you can’t locate where they are located, check your motherboard’s manual.

You can use the two methods to locate the front panel connectors:

  • Use the Motherboard Manual
  • Read the Labels Physically that is mentioned On the Motherboard

1. Using The Motherboard Manual

You can find the front panel header by looking in the motherboard manual. Most manuals will tell you what pins are for what, so it should be easy to understand if you read them carefully.

For instance, the following image shows just how easy it is to find your Front Panel Connectors on a motherboard. I have Gigabyte GA P67A UD3, and their location was precise for me right away:

Another important thing to note is that the Front Panel Connectors may be called the “front panel header on some motherboards.” They essentially do exactly what their names suggest.

2. By Reading the Labels Physically, that is mentioned On the Motherboard.

Start by finding the pin headers of the motherboard on its circuit board. A lot of motherboards have a label that tells users where they are located.

If not, look at your motherboard diagram instead for information about what pins are for single-purpose devices or power switches/reset buttons/LEDs, etc.

The Front Panel Connectors are the wires that connect to your computer’s front panel. The label “F_Panel” denotes this connection. For instance, on my motherboard, it says “FP-628“.

What Are the Different Types of Front Panel Connectors?

There are lots of different types of connectors that come with your computer case. There is an LED header, which can be helpful if you like keeping your computer’s status lights bright to show if it’s on or off.

A speaker connector allows for essential feedback from your computer, such as beeping and popping sounds during startup.

There may even be a reset button that can reset your BIOS (a program that comes with your computer and allows it to boot up.

How to Know Which Pins to Use for What on?

Again there are two ways to figure this out. You can look at your motherboard manual, or you can look at the actual board itself.

Before you start connecting wires to pins, ensure that you know which one is for power and which ones are for ground. This way, if something goes wrong on your pin connector, you will be aware of what’s happening and won’t fry your motherboard by accident.

Below are the image that shows the labels of indicating the function of pins on my F_Panel.

Below mage shows that the same pins but the motherboard’s is on manual:

Front panel header

It’s essential to consult your motherboard as to what the physical labels indicate because, in some instances, such as with my device shown above, there can be some unique connectors that will confuse you.

Here are some features that my pin connectors have:

  • + MSG – Message LED (Power/Sleep LED/Message/ Yellow/Purple LED) – Indicates the PC’s power status.
  • + CL – Chassis Intrusion Header (Gray LED) – The sensor will detect if your PC case cover has been removed. The only problem is that it requires a specific type of computer chassis to work, so this may not be an option for everyone.

Make sure you connect the cables from your PC case to their respective pins. On my FPanel, I connected two wires that would go into the Power Switch button for this purpose (the image below shows where they are).

What to Prepare Before Making a Front Panel Connector?

It would be best if you could prepared a front panel connector cable before making one yourself. All it takes are some thin gauge wires cut cleanly in half with the ends stripped, so they are easier to connect to the headers/pin connectors on your motherboard or case.

Front Panel Power Connectors Can Be Used to Jump the Motherboard

The Front Panel Connectors are an important part of the system because they allow you to jump-start your PC when there isn’t enough power coming from the wall.

If you lay both pins down on top of each other, this will cause a circuit which pushes electricity through into all parts inside and start up our machine.

Computer Motherboard Front Panel Pinouts

Front panel header

If you buy a new computer motherboard it usually comes with an user manual. There you should be able to find the front panel header pinout information for the motherboard, sometimes the pinout diagram is printed on the motherboard too. But you may have trouble when changing the computer’s casing if you lost the manual and the pinout information is nowhere to be found on the board. Not all motherboards use the same front panel header pinout, you can search the Internet but it may be hard to find the correct pinout information if the motherboard is not a common model. I had such bad experience so I wrote this post for all the front panel connector diagrams that I ever used.

Computer front panel header is where the connectors of casing cables (reset button, power on/off button, power on light and hard disk activity light) and the motherboard are connected. Sometimes it includes speaker connector. But front USB, front audio, card reader are not included in this header because they have their own connectors.

Connecting Your Motherboard’s Front-Panel Header, Demystified

Front-panel button/LED connectors have troubled builders for as long as build-your-own PCs have existed, but the biggest struggle for experienced builders is watching as those with less experience dole out bad advice. Most of those struggles are needless, since most manufactures have since adopted the Intel front-panel header standard first published in the late 1990s.

Front panel header

Intel’s nine-pin header is “keyed” by leaving out a single pin on right side of its upper row, which is opposite of the lower row right key pin of the similar USB 2.0 header. There’s little to fear here, as LEDs are polarized and simply don’t function if connected backwards. Power and reset buttons bridge their two pins so that polarity isn’t important. After doing several of these, we’ve learned that the text printed on LED connectors usually faces down (ie, the positive pin is usually on the left when the text is facing down).

Front panel header

A few builders even luck out to find a single-lead “F_PANEL” cable on their cases (InWin labels these EAD015). This is not a mistake and is not USB: Using it does not require a breakout adapter…unless you have an oddball motherboard as we’ll discuss below. The hole that corresponds to the missing pin is normally plugged or blocked out to prevent it from being inserted the wrong way.

The Short Story

Intel introduced its ATX front-panel connector in an era when most cases were designed to support motherboards of both the ATX and its predecessor, Baby AT form factors. Here’s what an AT cable set looks like:

Front panel header

Baby AT motherboards had a power LED connector with 3-pin spacing, whereas Intel used 2-pin spacing. Because of this, early consumer ATX cases usually came with a Baby AT compatible power LED connector. But that’s all behind us now.

Asus Turned Around And Came Back

Asus was one of the first third-party manufacturers to support Intel’s front-panel header back when the wiring of most cases didn’t. Builders complained and Asus went back to its original non-standard front-panel header, waiting a few years before reintroducing the Intel layout on an extended front-panel connector that also supported legacy cables:

Front panel header

Notice that Intel’s 9-pin pattern is found on the left side of Asus’s current header, and that an additional section to the right of those standard pins now includes a legacy (AT) power LED pin set and a PC Speaker pin set for beep code diagnostics.

Gigabyte Does Extras, Too

Front panel header

Gigabyte uses the Intel standard for the left side of its connector, but with the no-contact pin repurposed for those who need a chassis intrusion header. A one-piece Intel-spec front-panel cable still fits its left side. As with Asus, speaker and redundant power LED pins are positioned to the right of the standard section.

ASRock, MSI…even ECS, EVGA, Colorful, and NZXT!

Every major player has been onboard with Intel’s front-panel header for many years, along with a bunch of lower-volume brands. We even checked some old Sapphire and Abit boards and still found the Intel 9-pin front-panel header! In fact, Supermicro is the only remaining brand we’ve worked with that does not use at least the eight connected pins of Intel’s 9-pin front-panel connector, since the firm decided to put all of its ground pins on a single row.

But what about Biostar?

Biostar introduced Intel’s header in 2020 with its Z490 motherboards. The last well-known brand to make the switch, its X570 motherboards were unfortunately designed before that transition. Since those 2019 models are still being sold as current, we find it important to detail this exception:

Front panel header

Notice that the eight required pins pushed up against the right edge of the connector are in the same order as Intel’s standard header. Normally we’d recommend hanging the right-edge of a one-piece front-panel connector off the right edge of the front-panel header, but Biostar chose to place a plastic frame around its front-panel header.

Using a case with a one-piece connector means hoping that there’s enough space between the plastic frame and front-panel cable to hang it past the right edge. Less attractive options include trimming off that connector’s key pins (which you’ll never get back when you upgrade your motherboard), trimming off the right edge of the plastic shell (voiding your motherboard warranty), or buying a breakout adapter for your front-panel cable.

Other Front-Panel Connections

USB ports and audio jacks are served by the other standardized front-panel connections. From left to right are Gen2 and Gen1 USB3 cables, USB 2.0, and HD-Audio. The Gen2 connector is keyed on the outside with metal tabs on its edges so that if it can’t plug in one way it will the other, the Gen 1 connector has an external plastic key tab in the middle that fits into a corresponding slot on the header’s outer shell. Though they appear similar to a one-piece front-panel connector the nine-pin USB 2.0 and HD-Audio connectors have unique blocked pin placement that prevent these from accidentally being plugged into the wrong header.

Front panel header

TLDR: The reason we usually say “USB3” or “USB 3.x” is that the number following the decimal place is continuously being updated with the new version incorporating previous standards. The newer connector to the left currently supports USB 3.2 Gen2 (10Gbps) and USB 3.2 Gen2x2 (20Gbps) transfers, while the wide connector next to it currently supports USB 3.2 Gen1 (5Gbps per port). We expect the “generation” label to remain consistent even after these are added to the next USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) spec. Consistency is a rare commodity in the USB industry!
