How to customize ‘Precision Touchpad’ settings on Windows 10
You can manage your touchpad settings to improve navigation and multitasking on Windows 10. Here’s how to do it.

On Windows 10, «Precision Touchpad» is a implementation designed to overcome the limitations found with traditional touchpads.

Using this approach, instead of manufacturers having to build drivers that translate touchpad signals into mouse and gesture inputs, Windows 10 is able to understand the inputs directly. This means that on devices with supported hardware, the implementation can provide a more accurate and reliable pointer, and it enables other features, such as a broader range of multi-touch gestures, accidental activation prevention, battery life, security, and the ability to customize a lot of new settings.
If you have a relatively new laptop (such as a Surface Pro 6 or a Dell XPS laptop), it’s likely it includes support for Precision Touchpad, and you can customize the experience to suit your preferences, which can help you to improve navigation speeds and productivity.
In this Windows 10 guide, we’ll show you how to find out if your device includes support for Precision Touchpad, and we’ll outline the steps to enable, disable, and customize the experience.
- How to check if your device supports Precision Touchpad
- How to enable (or disable) Precision Touchpad
- How to customize taps with Precision Touchpad
- How to customize scroll and zoom with Precision Touchpad
- How to customize three-finger (or four-finger) gestures with Precision Touchpad
- How to customize advanced gestures with Precision Touchpad
- How to reset settings with Precision Touchpad
How to check if your device supports Precision Touchpad
Although nowadays most laptops and hybrid devices come with a Precision Touchpad, there are still devices, especially older laptops, that don’t support this technology. You can quickly find out if you can use and customize multi-touch gestures with your touchpad using these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Click on Devices.
- Click on Touchpad.
- Under «Touchpad,» it should read: «Your PC has a precision touchpad.»
If you don’t see the message, you’ll still find the settings page, but you’ll only get an option to adjust the touchpad sensitivity.
Alternatively, if your device doesn’t include support for Precision Touchpads, you can use this workaround to replace the current trackpad driver with the Microsoft driver for laptops that use Synaptics or Elan drivers.
How to enable (or disable) Precision Touchpad
The ability to use gestures with a touchpad can be useful to improve your productivity, but it’s not something for everyone and does not always works flawlessly. If you want to disable the experience, use the following steps:
If you also use your device with a traditional mouse, you can choose to disable the touchpad as you connect the mouse by clearing the Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected option. In addition, you can use the available slider to adjust the cursor speed on the screen.
How to customize taps with Precision Touchpad
The default settings are usually good enough for most users, but you can customize many aspects of Precision Touchpads. For example, using the «Taps» options, you can customize the tapping behavior when using a touchpad when clicking and selecting. Here’s how:
- Open Settings.
- Click on Devices.
- Click on Touchpad.
- Under the «Taps» section, use the Touchpad sensitivity drop-down menu to adjust the sensitivity level of the touchpad. Options available, include:
- Most sensitive.
- High sensitive.
- Medium sensitivity (default and optimal).
- Low sensitive.
- Select the tap gestures that you want to use on Windows 10. Options available include:
- Tap with a single finger to single-click.
- Tap with two fingers to right-click.
- Tap twice and drag to multi-select.
- Press the lower right corner of the touchpad to right-click.

How to customize scroll and zoom with Precision Touchpad
The Windows 10 Precision Touchpad settings also allow you to decide if you can use gesture to scroll content, the scrolling direction, and if you can use pinch to zoom, just like on tablets. Here’s how.
- Open Settings.
- Click on Devices.
- Click on Touchpad.
- Under the «Scroll and zoom» section, decide whether or not to use drag two fingers to scroll gestures.
- Use the «Scrolling direction» drop-down menu to change the scrolling gestures. Options available include:
- Down motion scrolls up.
- Down motion scrolls down.
In addition, under the «Scroll and zoom» section, you can enable or disable pinch to zoom depending on your preferences.
How to customize three-finger (or four-finger) gestures with Precision Touchpad
Using the Precision Touchpad settings, you can control gestures with three or four fingers, which helps you speed up navigation when working with multiple apps, virtual desktops, and you can even use gestures to control audio and volume. Here’s how:

- Open Settings.
- Click on Devices.

- Switch desktop and show desktop: Enables three-finger swipe up to open Task View, down to show the desktop, and swipe left and right to switch between virtual desktops.
- Change audio and volume: Allows you to swipe up to turn the system volume up, down to turn the volume down, and left and right to skip to the previous or next song using a music app.

- Use the Taps drop-down menu to customize the three-finger tapping action. Options available, include:
- Nothing.
- Share with Cortana.
- Action Center.
- Play/pause.
- Middle mouse button.
If the touchpad supports it, you’ll also find a section to configure an additional gesture using four fingers.
How to customize advanced gestures with Precision Touchpad
Using the Settings app, it’s also possible to customize additional advanced settings when using three-finger (or four-finger) gestures on the touchpad, and you can access and customize the settings using these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Click on Devices.
- Click on Touchpad.
- Under «Related settings,» on the right side, click the Advanced gesture configuration link.
Instead of using one of the sets of actions under «Three-finger gestures» (or «Four-finger gestures»), this page allows you to specify custom actions for each swipe or tap.
For instance, you can select to use a three-finger tap or swipe on the Precision Touchpad to open Action Center. Or you can choose the Custom shortcut option to specify a keyboard shortcut that you want to execute when using a three-finger tap.
Here’s a list of actions that you can use with the three-finger gesture:
- Nothing.
- Switch apps.
- Task view.
- Show desktop.
- Switch desktops.
- Hide everything other than the app in фокус.
- Create desktop.
- Remove desktop.
- Forward navigation.
- Backward navigation.
- Snap window to the left.
- Snap window to the right.
- Maximize a window.
- Minimize a window.
- Next track.
- Previous track.
- Volume up.
- Mute.
- Custom shortcut.
After completing these steps, the three-finger gesture will execute the custom command you specified.

If you мейд changes to use the touchpad with custom configurations, you can restore the original settings using these steps:

- Open Settings.
- Click on Devices.
- Click on Touchpad.
- Under the «Rest your touchpad» section, click the Reset button.
Once you complete these steps, the touchpad will revert to its default settings.

I don’t like the feeling of my Matebook X Pro touchpad drivers, compared to my Surface Pro 3. Although the MBX Pro has a better touchpad I don’t like the behavior/interpretation on the screen. Would this be fixed if I use MS drivers? Anyone has experience with this?
I only have my type cover attached during use half the time since I prefer the touch screen in most cases. The only time I actually use the TouchPad is when the sucky Windows 10 touch User Experience is too small for fingers to accurately hit something. In this case, using the TouchPad as a mouse works better. Maybe someday Satya Nadella will get his head out of the up-and-locked position and have Windows 10 improved for touch users.
You think the touch experience is «sucky» but you use it half the time even with the trackpad available?
As for me default settings for TouchPad control are too limited. I use gesture sign app to create dozens of gestures to control not only volume, playback etc, but browser behavior, brightness and so on. This app works with touch screen too, but it is less handy as if it will be a part of the system.
Mind sharing your custom touchpad gestures?
Three fingers diagonally right down — ( \ ) — new tab in a browser, also previously it worked fine with tabs in preview versions of Windows;
Three finger like a check mark — ( \/ ) — close tab in a browser, as previous gesture also worked with tabs in Windows;
Three fingers diagonally left up — ( \ ) — previous tab in browser; back in explorer;
Three fingers diagonally right up — ( / ) — next tab in browser; forward in explorer;
Three fingers up ( | ) — up level in explorer;
Three fingers round — ( o ) — refresh == ctrl + R;
Four fingers round — ( o ) — restore last closed tab in browser;
Three fingers like literal N — ( /\/ )- mute;
Three fingers — ( _↑ ) — to the top == ctrl + home
Three fingers — ( _↓) — to the bottom == ctrl + end This is the most used ones in touchpad. As I said previously this gestures also work with a touchscreen, but it isn’t so handy for me.
Does anyone know with Precision drivers, is there any way to have «Edge Motion» (at least that’s what Synaptics calls it). That’s where when you get to the edge of the trackpad, you just hold your finger at the edge and it will keep moving in that direction until you release. It’s not a big deal when you’re just moving the cursor, but if you’re dragging an item, it’s essential. Otherwise, you literally can’t get it to where you intended. Since switiching to the Precision Drivers, better in many ways, but I don’t see how to turn on the essential Edge Motion feature.
Wow do I feel stupid — it’s automatic with Precision. I’m so used to having to turn it on and testing it by just moving the cursor without actually dragging anything, it hadn’t occurred to me it would be built in but only when dragging. Anyway, please ignore my prior question Precision drivers really are better! 🙂
What are Microsoft Precision touchpad drivers?

Best answer: Microsoft Precision touchpads use a standardized set of drivers that offer a consistent, smooth, and accurate pointing experience. Although Precision drivers first appeared in the Surface Pro 2 and have since been used in every Surface device, many laptop manufacturers beyond Microsoft also take advantage of the drivers to deliver the best possible pointing.Notebook Surface: Surface Laptop 3 (opens in new tab) (From $900 at Microsoft)Premium Ultrabook: Dell XPS 13 9300 (opens in new tab) (From $980 at Dell)
Why are Microsoft’s Precision drivers preferred?
Back in the Windows 8.1 and Surface Pro 2 days, Apple was kicking everyone else’s butts with its touchpad experience. There really wasn’t much competition between iMac and Windows laptops (at least in the touchpad game), so Microsoft decided it was time to create a set of drivers that would deliver a standardized experience across its Surface devices.
Precision touchpads include drivers and gestures that are upgraded with Windows 10 feature updates, and altogether offer consistent and smooth pointing that is accurate and responsive. If you’ve ever used a touchpad with Synaptics or Elan drivers (two common competitors) and quickly switched over to a laptop with a Precision touchpad, the difference is noticeable.
Microsoft doesn’t seem to differentiate between the physical hardware of the touchpad, which is why we see plenty of laptops in the Precision touchpad category despite considerable differences in size and materials. You might find a budget laptop with a small plastic touchpad alongside a premium Ultrabook with an enormous glass touchpad, and both are using Precision drivers. This ultimately gives third-party manufacturers like Dell, Lenovo, HP, Самсунг, Acer, and Razer a lot of flexibility when designing machines.
With a Precision touchpad, you get the full gamut of Windows 10 gestures, including multi-finger taps and swipes for shortcuts to everything from prompting Cortana to quickly switching between windows. You can also go quite deep when it comes to customizing Precision touchpad settings if the stock settings aren’t acceptable.
Can you install Precision drivers on a non-Precision touchpad?
If you have a laptop that uses Synaptics or Elan drivers — which used to be commonly found in HP laptops and some budget devices — and want to switch over to Precision, there is a way to do it, though it’s understandably not a foolproof process.
We’ve created a guide that will walk you through the entire process, but know that Windows 10 updates have caused the process to not work as well as it once did. If it doesn’t work, the solution is to buy a laptop that comes with Precision drivers straight from the factory.
If you’re curious whether or not your laptop is using Precision drivers, there’s a simple way to check just by following these steps.
At the top of the window, you should see a note that says «Your PC has a precision touchpad» if indeed it’s using Microsoft’s drivers.
What laptops come standard with Precision drivers?
Until Microsoft makes a decision concerning mandatory Precision drivers in all Windows 10 laptops, the market can be confusing. HP’s business lineup of EliteBooks, for example, has been using Precision drivers for quite awhile, while the consumer side, including the impressive HP Spectre x360 13t, only switched over to Precision drivers late 2019.
You can be assured that all Surface devices (opens in new tab) use Precision drivers, but if you’re shopping elsewhere, be sure to double-check the touchpad before making a final decision. Our ever-growing collection of laptop reviews is a great place to start.
