Introduction
SATA is a bus interface for communicating with mass storage devices (such as disk drives, optical drives, etc). The composition is mostly identical to PATA, where one controller connects to several devices using SATA cables. SATA wiring is also one-on-one instead of allowing more than one device to be connected to a single cable. When SATA was introduced, almost all host controllers were configured to masquerade as an PATA controller, needing no change from the existing disk drivers. The majority of SATA controllers also support AHCI, which offers connecting more devices than PATA allows, and significant other advantages over the legacy protocol.
Computers that are currently shipped often are AHCI only, and backwards compatibility mode, if present, has to be manually enabled from the BIOS — a change that often comes with the cost of making the installed OSes unbootable.
The actual SATA specification is split into three distinct protocol ‘layers’.
- Physical Layer — Information relating to the physical connectors, etc. Not especially relevant here.
- Link Layer
- Transport Layer
At the time of writing, there were three supposedly definitive, conflicting standards for SATA. It may be best to wait for the industry to shake out a little more completely, before trying to write SATA drivers.
If you want to try anyway, then get the ATA7, and ATA8 technical docs from www.t13.org. Then maybe try paying $25 to get the technical specs from www.sata-io.org. Hopefully, the discrepancies between the standards aren’t too bad.
Detection and Initialization
Send a standard IDENTIFY command to the drive (0xEC). The drive should respond with an error in the ERR bit of the Status Register, and a pair of «signature bytes». On the Primary ATA bus, you get the signature bytes by reading IO ports 0x1F4 and 0x1F5, and you should see values of 0x3C and 0xC3.

Non-Volatile Memory Host Controller Interface Specification

SanDisk «AHCI and NVMe as Interfaces for SATA».
Из нее всем интересующимся полезно будет выяснить, что «AHCI was developed at a time when the purpose of the HBA in a system was to connect the CPU/Memory subsystem with the much slower rotating media-based storage subsystem. Such an interface has some inherent inefficiency when applied to SSD devices, which behave much more like DRAM than spinning media».
- Legacy SATA – обычный SATA накопитель;
- SATA Express / AHCI – накопитель с физическим интерфейсом SATA Express и встроенным контроллером, совместимым со эталоном AHCI;

Single-Root Input-Output Virtualization:
ч. SATA.

Flash disk SATA drives are solid state drives or hard disk drives that use the SATA interface. The SATA interface forms the connection between the data on the drive and the main computer system. SATA replaced PATA—previously known simply as ATA—as an interface, and was favored thanks to its thinner, flexible cables, faster speeds, and higher transfer capacities. Flash disk SATA drives are found in a large number of applications and devices in both the consumer and industrial markets. Get the facts about flash disk SATA drives here.
Hard Disk Drives versus Solid State Drives
SATA interfaces work with both hard disk drives—also known as HDDs—and solid state drives, or SSDs. HDDs were the industry standard for many reasons, including cost and reliability, for a long period of time. Today, SSDs are by far the more common drive format. HDDs have a spinning disk on which data are recorded. This disk has to spin in order for data to be read and written. This mechanical disk makes the drive more prone to failure.
SSDs, on the other хэнд, do not have any moving parts. As a result, they are far more reliable than HDDs. Since SSDs have become much more affordable and have a longer lifespan than HDDs, they have replaced HDDs in most devices. If you are looking for a modern flash drive with a SATA interface, you will almost certainly be shopping for an SSD.
SATA Interface
A SATA flash SSD is simply a storage drive that connects to the computer via a SATA interface. SATA, or Serial ATA, is designed according to specifications set by the SATA-IO, or Serial ATA International Organization. These standards ensure that all SATA drives have comparable designs, so that developers always know what they are getting.
There have been multiple SATA redesigns over the years. The current iteration of SATA is SATA 3.2, which supports flash drive transfer rates of 6 Gbps. SATA 3.2 also includes SATA Express, or SATAe, which supports PCIe connections for even faster data transfer speeds. SATA 3.2 is particularly important for new device designs that require increased transfer speeds.
