System.core.dll

First, you need to understand why the system.core.dll file is missing and what the cause of the system.core.dll error is. Often the software cannot function because of flaws in the .dll files.

What does a DLL file mean? Why are there DLL errors?

DLLs (Dynamic-Link Libraries) are common libraries in Microsoft Windows, implemented by Microsoft Corporation. It is known that DLL files are just as important as files with an EXE extension. It is not possible to implement DLLs without using utilities with an .exe extension.

DLL files help developers apply standard code with information to update software functionality without using recompilation. It turns out that MSVCP100.dll files contain code with data for different programs. One DLL file was allowed to be used by other software, even if you don’t need it. As a result there is no need to create copies of the same information.

When should we expect a missing System.core.dll error to occur?

Method 5: Scan the system for malware and viruses

System File Checker (SFC) is a Windows operating system utility that allows you to scan Windows system files and detect damage and restore system files. This guide provides information on correctly running System File Checker (SFC.exe) to scan system files and recover missing/damaged system files, such as .DLLs. When a Windows Resource Protection (WRP) file is corrupted or simply missing, the Windows system begins to act up and with problems. Often certain Windows functions stop functioning, and your computer crashes. The option «sfc scannow» is used as one of the special switches available thanks to the sfc command, a command-line command used to run the System File Checker. You must first open the command line, then type «command line» in the «Search» field to run it. Now right-click on «Command Prompt» and select «Run as administrator.» It is mandatory to run the command line to do a scan of the SFC.

  • Run a full system scan thanks to an antivirus program. Do not rely only on Windows Defender, but choose an additionally verified antivirus program.
  • As soon as a threat is detected, you should reinstall the program that shows the infection notification. It’s best to reinstall the program right away.
  • Try to perform a system startup restore, but only when the above methods have not worked.
  • If nothing helps, then reinstall Windows.

In the command line window, enter the command «sfc /scannow» and press Enter. System File Checker will start its work, which will not last more than 15 minutes. Wait for the scan to complete, then restart your PC. Now the error ‘The program cannot start due to the error System.core.dll is missing on your computer should not appear.

Method 6: Registry cleaner

Registry Cleaner is considered a powerful utility for cleaning unnecessary files, fixing registry problems, figuring out the causes of slow PC operation, and troubleshooting issues. The utility is ideal for all computers. A user with administrator privileges will be able to scan and then clean the registry faster.

  • Load application in Windows.
  • Install the program and run it — all processes of cleaning and fixing problems on the PC will go automatically.

Can I add a reference to System.Core.dll (.net 3.5) to a .net 2.0 application and use it

Can I add a reference to System.Core.dll (.net 3.5) to a .net 2.0 application and use it I am trying to use the TimeZoneInfo class which is available in .net 3.5 only, by referencing System.Core.dll Alternatively, is their an alternate for TimeZoneInfo in .net 2.0 (or a customised class)

Why don’t you just upgrade to .net 3.5?

Mkay, thats not always practical for everyone

Note that TimeZoneInfo is located in mscorlib.dll, not in System.Core.dll

No you really should not. You must install 3.5 on the target machine or you will run into unpredictable behavior in the running program. The 3.5 framework including System.Core.dll depend on several bug fixes / features that were added to CLR 2.0 SP1 (this is a part of 3.5 framework). If you run against an unpatched CLR you will be essentially running untested code and will likely hit several bugs.

You’re definitely more qualified on this topic than most, but might I suggest should not instead of cannot?

May 5, 2009 at 2:35

@Rex, I changed it to «should not». I added the cannot originally because I figured there was a legal issue why you could not deploy. But I’m not a lawyer so I rescinded to simply my programming opinion of you «really» shouldn’t be doing this :).

Scott Hanselman wrote a blog post describing how to run an early version of MVC on the 2.0 framework. He noted that the dependencies on System.Core will probably be OK as long as you are very careful not to call any routines that depend on CLR features specific to 3.0+ (for example, LINQtoSQL).

He rightly plastered the blog post with disclaimers that it is not supported, it very well might not work for you, but he got it to work and if you can, then yay for you.

I’m not sure if you can do this with System.Core.dll, but we have done this before with the Linq2Sql dlls for a .net 2.0 application. .net 3.5 uses the same version of the CLR with new assemblies built upon the .net 2.0 runtime. If you can get all of the dependencies, it might work. As I said, this worked for us with Linq2Sql dlls, but is not guaranteed for all scenarios. (For example, you probably wont be able to get WPF to run on Windows 2000, but you might be able to get Linq to Objects to work)

.net 3.5 runs on .net 2.0 runtime. So you should be able to use it. But referencing a single dll would lead to unexpected behaviour as you don’t know all the dependencies system.core.dll have. I would recommend not to do that.

You can do this, currently doing the same thing for a tool for work — also to utilize the TimeZoneInfo stuff. As long as thats all you’re using you shouldn’t run into any issues (at least I haven’t).

However I’m not entirely sure of the legalities of bundling System.Core with your app. From what I know you’re not allowed to.

I ended up utilizing the one from Mono for the tool that uses it.

Just a caveat around this: you can have issues around Assembly signing, but more to the point the Mono one requires TZ files that it parses — you’d need to set the location to these files to get it to work (a static property on TimeZoneInfo does this: TimeZoneDirectory). You can get these files from here: elsie.nci.nih.gov/pub These files are Public Domain in case anyone is worried about the license around them

System.core.dll v3.5 is missing

Question

Not sure where to post this because what i am trying to do is get my build working on a build server, but it is failing because it is missing a 3.5 frame work dll. I just installed the 4.0 framework on my build server (TFS 2008). My builds that use the web deploy projects have started failing, they are all still vs 2008 projects running on 3.5 framework. The ASPNETCOMPILER can no longer find the system.core that is in in the web.config (it is version 3.5). I looked on the build machine in the framework folders and system.core.dll (v3.5) is nowhere to be found. the 4.0 version is where it is expected to be. I checked add remove programs and I have .net framework 3.5 SP1 installed, so I ran the repair. Even after running the repair there is no System.core.dll (v3.5).

Some clarification with you?
What’s the OS of your server? Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2?

Based on your description, it seems that you have some concern on TFS build with the error «it is missing a 3.5 framework dll (system.core.dll)» when you try to build .NET Framework 3.5 project. You also cannot manually find system.core.dll file on your machine.

To eliminate the possible cause of corrupted .NET Framework 3.5 installation, please help me to check the following steps:

If you’re running Windows Server 2008 R2:

For Windows Server 2008 R2, .NET Framework 3.5 with SP1 is shipped with it as one of OS component.
For .NET Framework 3.5 with SP1, it includes .NET 2.0 with SP2 and .NET 3.0 with SP2 as prerequisite. They are OS components.
You can use Verification Tool to verify the .Net Framework 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 on your machine.
If .Net Framework 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 cannot be verified on your computer, you can try to follow the steps mentioned in the following blog to repair the .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 on Server 2008.
See: http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/26 Марта 2007/how-to-repair-the-net-framework-2-0-and-3-0-on-windows-vista.aspx (also apply for Server 2008)

If you’re running Windows Server 2008:

You can try Cleanup tool to remove .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. Then download .NET Framework 3.5 full package and reinstall it on your server.

Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.
